Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization, commonly referred to as SEO, is the process of using keyword phrases related to a site for achieving top search engine placement in the natural (free) results. Of all Internet marketing strategies, SEO is generally the most sought after as it becomes the most cost-effective over time when executed properly.

Important SEO steps

In order to really take full advantage of an SEO campaign it can be greatly beneficial to consider a few pertinent factors that amount to the overall effectiveness and results.

  1. Website goals

A very important (and often overlooked) aspect of SEO is getting an accurate understanding of the scope of the website being promoted. Some questions to consider may be:

    • Is more traffic the answer to the web site's problem?
    • How big is the website expected to grow from the traffic?
    • How long will these changes take to complete?
    • Can the company internally make great use of the increase in traffic?

The answers to questions such as these develop a realistic guideline as to where a company may expect to see itself after completion of an SEO campaign.

  2. SEO Competition analysis

It is very important to know where a website stands in relation to its competition. The purpose here is to really take in as many facts about the competition as possible and develop a full understanding that allows for the learning of new areas of opportunity and paths to avoid. It is beneficial to know which areas have already been dominated by the competition, and which areas are not paid attention to. To make the most impact on an SEO campaign it is important to build a unique direction and try not to do what everyone else is doing - even though it is still possible to do very well following the same direction.

  3. SEO Keyword research

Keyword research is in a sense the heart of SEO. It is where everything starts and what everything is built off. Without proper keyword analysis, no matter how well any of the other steps are followed it will all equate to being irrelevant and failing. Picking quality, relevant keywords is something that should be focused on not just from the beginning, but throughout the entire campaign as there may be new and undiscovered opportunities that become available as time moves forward.

  4. SEO Website architecture

Site architecture is the overall quality and build of the website itself. It is important to have a well constructed site so search engines and users both understand what's going on and have a clear picture and sense of the site. Just as one would expect a home to have a solid foundation and a sturdy roof, the same can be said about a website. Without the proper architecture the website has little value.

  5. SEO Overall value

Another often overlooked attribute of Search Engine Optimization is the overall value of the website/company/service. It is very hard to start with something that is already of relatively low quality and try to change it into something that is of high SEO quality. It is much better to start with something of high quality and enhance it to the highest possible level. A large part of SEO is having something of value that others will enjoy and talk about. There needs to be a sense of worth that satisfies each user's goals when they reach any given website. A website has to deliver on all their expectations and keep their trust the whole way.

The combination of these Search Engine Optimization factors, along with many many more, will result in the increase of not only search rankings and traffic, but it will also have positive effects on conversions, the brand, and overall trust.

SEO takes time

SEO is not something that is done overnight. It takes time and commitment to make sure all the aspects of Search Engine Optimization are properly fulfilled. Search engines take time to see the changes made to a website and calculate how much weight these changes hold.
